CHAPTER NINE

Meeting celebrities was always a bit weird, Jesse had found.

He would half-recognize them and for an instant his brain would start shuffling through where they'd met before, like they were people he knew from the neighborhood. But the familiarity was one-sided; it was just a collection of videos or pictures that Jesse had seen that tricked him into thinking he knew a stranger.

Meeting Annabel was like that cranked up to eleven.

Jesse had the basics of her life, beyond what Grayson had told him—he'd been unable to resist looking her up and getting some of the history between them. So he knew that she'd been born in some small town in California to Korean immigrant parents, and had done commercials and beauty pageants as a little kid before getting parts in a series of wholesome tween TV shows. Jesse had felt a twinge of envy when he'd read about her two albums, released when she was fifteen and seventeen, but the cheery pop music hadn't done much for her career. Annabel had tried to move on to more serious movie roles when she turned eighteen, but the main interest in those from the press and audiences seemed to have been in seeing the former teen star take off her clothes. Returning to TV for The Drama had been seen as a comeback for her—a weird concept for a then-twenty-year-old. Then the interest in the show, and her and Grayson, had exploded.

Even knowing all that, he still had no idea what to make of Annabel Yang in person.

She was tiny—actress-thin, of course, and looking nearly a foot shorter than Grayson—but seemed to radiate energy. Her long hair was black and glossy, curling at the ends, and her dark eyes were sharp above high, wide cheekbones. As she swept into the restaurant in heels and a perfect dress, it wasn't a cliché to say that all eyes were on her. And when Grayson bent his long body to wrap her in a hug, wearing his widest and most dazzling smile, everyone watching smiled, too, because they looked so damn perfect together.

Standing beside Grayson, Jesse felt like a visitor from a much less glamorous planet. He nodded to the woman who had trailed in behind Annabel, who, like him, was standing back and letting Grayson and Annabel have their moment. "You must be Wendy," he said, and hoped his smile didn't look too strained.
